I have been in the Louis Vuitton stores and there are some bags that DO come with plastic wrap around the handles!!
The best way to tell is to check the style you have against the genuine article.
You can go onto EBAY and check...they sometimes have extensive pics of bags and wallets that they are selling and you can check the pics and compare them to what you have if you find the style you have, and the seller seems reputable and has a good feedback. Many of the Japanese sellers are selling authentic bags on there.

The catalog on the LV website and the inventory on eluxury.com. If you have never seen the item in question elsewhere, most likely, it doesn't exist. For example, there never was a Cherry Blossom Speedy or a Murakami Visor.
Handles Wrapped in Plastic/Hardware Wrapped in Tissue
Many times, authentic Louis Vuitton handbags will have handles made out of genuine rolled cowhide and they will NOT be wrapped in any kind of plastic or bubble wrap. If you see this on an item, it is a fake!
Cut Off, Asymmetrical Logos/Seam at Bottom of Bag
Louis Vuitton expertly crafts their handbags out of one continuous piece of of fabric or leather so if the item in question has cut off/asymmetrical logos or a seam at the bottom of the bag, it is not authentic.|||Did they get it used or new? One very easy way to know if it's real or fake if they bought it new is, did they buy it at a Louis Vuitton boutique or in a Saks fifth Avenue or Neiman marcus? If they got it from a place like ebay, amazon, overstock etc. There are few simple ways you can tell. The wallets are pretty basic, there should be no LV's cut off in the zipper seams on top or on the side's of the wallet, there should be a leather smell inside, because their wallets are always real leather inside. The zipper should have a little weight to it. -- The 'plastic wrap on the handles' thing is not true -- the bags arrive at LV with plastic on the handles - but the SA is supposed to take it off for the customer - some customers ask for it to be left on =)
